I've been blessed with many awards and honors in my life, but this most recent honor has taken my breath away! I am now a member of the Texas Women's Hall of Fame. No doubt one of the reasons for the honor is because we are "making Texas and the world sweeter." For those of you who are not familiar with the Susie's South Forty story, here it is:

In the mid-Seventies, I started teaching social dancing through the YMCA, Junior Coalition, and other venues. Most of the dancing was country/western and line dancing, and I usually wore my favorite, bright-red cowboy boots. By 1991, my love of cooking led me to develop candy recipes and open Susie's South Forty Confections.

Our World Famous Texas Pecan Toffee was my first candy, quickly followed by creamy caramel Kickers® Pralines. I design all of my own boxes, and the shape and color of the Kickers® box is a nod to those red boots that I love so much!

I no longer have time for the dance lessons, although I still love to scoot a boot with my husband, Mike. In these 25+ years, the business has gone from that little factory to a big beautiful facility in Downtown Midland, designed with visitors in mind. We ship to all 50 states and 35 countries. I've provided candy for the George W. Bush inaugural ball, and served on a multitude of local and state-wide boards, both professional and non-profit. They tell me these are the reasons that I'm now in the Hall of Fame, but I surely don't do it for the honors. it's a love of family, friends, and Midland that keeps me going

I wish you all the best!

Texas Pecan Toffee was Susie’s original creation, followed soon after by KICKERS® pralines, Fudge Richey®, and WINNERS® caramels (so named because one of her “tasters” deemed that recipe a “winner”). Today, Susie’s South Forty Confections produces 21 varieties of handmade candy, with two gift shop locations in Midland. There is also a wholesale show space in the Dallas Market Center, and Susie and her team display at major food trade shows each year.

Mail order is a big part of our business, with customers in all 50 states. Former President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush are fans, as well. Corporations, large and small, count on Susie’s South Forty Confections for holiday gifts. In fact, we have had customers tell us that they used to “mix it up” with different holiday gifts each year, until their clients started asking, “you are going to be sending me some more of that candy, aren’t you?” We pride ourselves on our ability to create memorable business gifts that get noticed − and enjoyed!

Susie’s South Forty Confections has received a number of honors over the years, including:
  • Food Network: Unwrapped, featuring Texas Trash®
  • One of the “Fastest Growing Basket Businesses in America” from Festivities Publications
  • “Best Fudge” and “Best Frozen Dessert" from the Austin Texas Fancy Foods Show.
