|World-Famous Toffee and now a New World Record!|
|Susie Hitchcock-Hall’s love of cooking and entertaining led her to start Susie’s South Forty Confections, Inc. in 1991. Originally located down a country road behind forty acres of pecan trees south of Midland, Texas, the “new” factory is five times the size of the original. When we moved there, in 2002, the new space seemed as big as Texas – so we celebrated by making a Texas-sized piece of candy! The Texas Pecan Toffee, Susie’s original and still best-selling confection, weighed in at 2,940 pounds (with 2,056.000 calories!) with a retail value of $57,000. It earned us a Guinness™ World Record! The toffee was donated to local soup kitchens and other non-profit organizations. |
Texas Pecan Toffee was Susie’s original creation, followed soon after by KICKERS® pralines, Fudge Richey®, and WINNERS® caramels (so named because one of her “tasters” deemed that recipe a “winner”). Today, Susie’s South Forty Confections produces 21 varieties of handmade candy, with separate gift shop locations in Midland and Odessa. There is also a wholesale show space in the Dallas Market Center, and Susie and her team display at major food trade shows each year.
Mail order is a big part of our business, with customers in all 50 states. Former President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush are fans, as well. Corporations, large and small, count on Susie’s South Forty Confections for holiday gifts. In fact, we have had customers tell us that they used to “mix it up” with different holiday gifts each year, until their clients started asking, “you are going to be sending me some more of that candy, aren’t you?” We pride ourselves on our ability to create memorable business gifts that get noticed – and enjoyed!
Susie’s South Forty Confections has received a number of honors over the years, including: Food Network: Unwrapped, featuring Texas Trash®One of the “Fastest Growing Basket Businesses in America” from Festivities Publications“Best Fudge” and “Best Frozen Dessert from the Austin Fancy Foods Show.
Susie Hitchcock-Hall’s entrepreneurial career began in 1974 when she started teaching social dancing (country/western and line dancing) in Midland. Through the YMCA, church classes, Junior Cotillion and private lessons, thousands of West Texans can navigate the dance floor with ease thanks to her. The start of her confections business didn’t mark the end of the dance lessons – she supplemented her income with her boot-scooting instructions during the first several years of Susie’s South Forty Confections. In fact, the red, boot-shaped box that holds KICKERS® Pralines is designed after her favorite pair of red dancing boots! Always active in the local community, Susie has served on dozens of boards, and chaired the United Way Capital Campaign, the Midland Chamber of Commerce, and the Midland Manufacturer’s Association.
Susie’s South Forty Confections is a certified Woman-Owned Business, and Susie has earned the Master Confectioner Emeritus status with Retail Confectioners International.
